On Sunday 25th October there will be a Workshop Event at the Vyne School, Vyne Road, Basingstoke, RG21 5NU, with Arnie Graf. This event will be the first of it’s kind in the UK, and we are working closely with John Denham.
Arnie Graf is credited as being one of President Obama’s mentors, he is a widely respected figure in community activism.
Graf has lived a very different way of doing politics. Born on the Lower East side of New York to a family with working-class roots, he was brought up to vote Democrat because they "supported the little guy rather than the rich guy". He was politicised by the civil rights movement. He became a state school–teacher and taught in Sierra Leone for two years before settling in the IAF – the oldest and largest network of community organisations in the US – where he rose to become co-director in Chicago. It was in Chicago he met Barack Obama.
The grassroots techniques promoted by Arnie Graf – empowering members, engaging a more diverse set of activists, encouraging small donations – were widely credited for helping Obama win in 2008.
This workshop will give us the chance to talk about grassroots activism, to learn from one the best and most respected community organisers.
