We will always need police officers and police forces to protect us. What is now a complete anathema to the regulation, recruitment and oversight of the police is the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). Conservative Michael Lane has become spectacular embarrassment to the police themselves, the public in general and the Tory party in their failed attempt to manage Hampshire’s excellent police service. 98% of Hampshire police officers have passed a motion of no confidence or trust in him whatsoever.
Realising they were in very deep difficulty, the Tories gave all PCCs the option of raising extra funds by increasing the precept. Their cunning plan was to show their response to public concern about the loss of 21000 police officers across the nation, including 120 + in Hampshire. Unfortunately, the quality of the leadership in most forces was one step ahead in financial planning for 2018-19 and cuts had already been made due to government funding being slashed unmercifully. The extra money raised by every Hampshire householder paying an extra £12 per year in police precept has already been totally lost. Hampshire’s police have been slashed, there will be no new appointments and front line policing numbers will not increase. While this was all happening, the PCC decided he needed some new wallpaper, a better desk, a new flower vase and a few other administrative necessities and so he awarded his office budget an extra £0.5m. Police jobs lost, more money just for his office. Is it any wonder police officers themselves have no confidence in him ?
The Tories were extremely quick to abolish the democratically elected Police Authorities, composed of elected Councillors and Lay members. They held their Chief Constables to account with business and forward planning being carefully, openly and transparently discussed. The Tories have starved our communities for money, resources and police on the streets. We have seen the rise of the omnipotent, unaccountable and remote PCCs mis-managing our right to effective protection. Labour will abolish PCCs and return to democratically managed police authorities. Michael Lane should resign now.
