(Please note that there are two vacancies in St Michael Ward)
I feel very privileged to be able to stand as a candidate in St Michael ward. I have previously been a councillor in the former St John and All Saints ward which covered part of this ward. I have lived in Highcliffe for over twenty years, and really appreciate being an active participant in the local community through groups such as the Highcliffe Community Forum for Action. I am also actively involved in several local Winchester groups that work to address various issues including climate change and sustainability, making Winchester a truly walkable city, and access to good food for everyone.
I would be keen to ensure that the Council works harder to engage with residents on an ongoing basis as partners, in order to make Winchester a better place for everyone to live in. Traditional and new methods of engagement need to be tried, to make sure that under-represented groups are included, and ensuring that everyone knows that their ideas and experiences are valued. Winchester should be an all ages and abilities friendly city.
The current pandemic has highlighted some of the harsh inequalities that exist in our society; it is vital that Covid recovery work brings about a fairer future for everyone in Winchester. No one should be struggling to have a safe, decent, secure and affordable roof over their head, or to eat healthily. No-one should be paid less than a Real Living Wage. Residents should be easily able to access diverse and affordable cultural and leisure activities and green spaces. This principle applies also to the work needed in tackling the climate and ecological emergency that we face – we need to make sure that we do this by making Winchester a greener, but, at the same time, a fairer city.
I would be eager to work collaboratively with local residents to help solve local issues and develop inspiring plans for the future. This would include encouraging greater co-operation between the City and County Councils. I would hope to listen to and support residents to the best of my ability.
