I’m an economics undergraduate and Winchester local, and I’m campaigning for housing reform, pedestrianisation and an emphasis on public space as a key part of community wellbeing.
Wonston and Micheldever ward deserve better. I will push for shared mobility schemes, pedestrianisation, as well as tackling the isolation among older people – which this pandemic has exacerbated – by strengthening community services and developing more reliable transport links.
I will push for Winchester City Council to act on the basis that homelessness is a political choice. I have a personal interest in this issue, launching a series of interviews with Winchester politicians and homelessness leaders following the ‘Everyone In’ Scheme last summer as part of the International Citizen Service qualification. The ‘Everyone In’ strategy proved that if we are ambitious, we can significantly reduce rough sleeping almost overnight. However, we also need to recognise that tackling homelessness means tackling food poverty, making housing truly affordable and dealing with health inequalities.
Finally, this is also a symbolic vote – a symbolic vote against a government which has presided over a decade of cuts to the police, anaemic NHS spending and chronic under-investment in national defense. If the Conservatives cannot govern in the national interest, they do not deserve your vote in these local elections. A vote for Labour in Winchester is a vote for competence, decency and empathy.
