I live in Fulflood where my child attends a local primary school. As a lifelong Labour supporter, I value education as the foundation of positive change in our society. I work with Southampton Council Employment Team providing arts opportunities for young people who are not in education and training and I’m in the process of setting up a theatre course for them. I’m a professional writer studying for a PhD at the University of Winchester. I believe that Arts mentors – government-funded professionals from the arts industries – should be assigned to all schools to mentor ANY child to encourage them in any of the arts platforms.
I am strongly motivated to petition local government to find ways to encourage children to exercise more, both in school and outside. With the increasing problem of ‘digital screens’ keeping children inactive for long periods, we need to act to prevent a potential health emergency. I am in favor of asking children what they see as problems and solutions, in health, environment and education as well as community, to hand them the initiative for the future. I want to introduce food education in schools from Reception onwards to accompany P.E. I am determined to increase awareness around food waste and sustainability for us locally as part of working toward a Greener Winchester.
With a vibrant University and local hospital, I would like to encourage the community in St Paul to come together as residents with those who work and study locally I suggest a community Hub, a diverse group of residents that encourages the diversity of modern living in the ward. This hub could be used to run forums to tackle local issues, like local decisions on road safety, women’s safety, sustainability and volunteering opportunities.
As a keen cyclist, I would love to see an extension of cycle lanes, 20 mph zones through the area. I am also very keen to see the increase of local amenities, such as public toilets in places like Oram’s Arbour, to encourage local people to be outdoors more.
